I concur. According to a YouTube commenter, Shash was able to find a direct mate (not just a best continuation) on my Trojan Horse composition in 30 seconds with a 16-core setup. I can’t test it yet online due to it not being on nextchessmove.com yet, but if that’s true (and I have no reason to doubt them), that means it could calculate a position to mate with 20% less CPU power than I was using with the 20-core
Dual Xeon E5-2680 v2 in 54 fewer plies (27 moves). That is outrageous! In my opinion, this must mean that Shash has an extremely solid fundamental understanding of fortresses, or perhaps it has a better pruning approach. If my assessment is correct, it’s potentially possible that Stockfish could learn a thing or two from its splinter engine (as ShashChess is an offshoot of Stockfish in the first place). I would love to see a game of Stockfish 14.1 against ShashChess on the same hardware.
